Sometimes comfort takes a backseat when we’re travelling for business. When the focus of travel is less leisurely and more work-related, it may not feel necessary to invest the time and effort to ensure a comfortable stay, simply due to the nature of the travel plans. If you’re guilty of this, read on to find out how comfort and headspace can positively influence the outcome of your business trip.
1. Invest in a lounge club membership
Passing through airport check-in and security is one of the most stressful parts of the pre-boarding waiting game, and if a crowded gate is what’s meeting you at the other end, you may just be testing the dark corners of your patience. Lounge club memberships not only direct you away from the crowded gates to a sanctuary of quiet space, but it can put you in a positive headspace and set you up for a comfortable, productive work trip. Plus, when there are delays, the value certainly proves itself; you can relax in the comfort of the lounge until your flight is ready to depart.
So get in there, enjoy those complimentary snacks and beverages, connect to the Wi-Fi that actually works, prep for your meetings, or catch up on the news in the lounge. They’re worth every penny.
Additionally, if you don't fly too frequently, there are options for drop-in lounges throughout Canada and the US which we offer discounted rates for.
2. Have a travel routine
Eating. Sleeping. Working out. We all know by now that a consistent daily routine adds structure to our day-to-day, helps us develop good habits, and benefits our mental health.
If you’re one to abandon your routine while you’re travelling, consider having a home version and a travel version. Depending on where you’re travelling and what kind of resources will be available to you, your travel routine can be as simple as waking up and making your bed.
In the words of Navy SEAL and US Admiral William H. McCraven during his 2014 University of Texas commencement speech:
“If you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride, and it will encourage you to do another task, and another, and another. And by the end of the day that one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed."
It’s a simple, yet effective task that can improve your well-being and influence positive behaviour for the rest of your trip. Take it from a Navy SEAL.
3. Find local shops & services
Get to know the neighbourhood or city you’ll be staying in before you arrive so that you can forage for anything you may need and cope with anything that might come your way. Make note of local shops and services, from supermarkets, drugstores, Wi-Fi hotspots and dry cleaners, to the nearest medical services clinic and hospital. Feel prepared to take on the world when you’re travelling. Your future-self will thank you.
If you need help finding a hotel that is close to certain amenities and services (such as a Whole Foods for healthy snacks, or a spa for a treatment after a long day of meetings) let us know and we'll research the area for you.
4. Make yourself at home
While travelling for business has its perks, there’s no place like home. If you’re a creature of habit, you probably hold the comforts of home to you near and dear, so why not bring them with you on your next trip? Whether it’s a blanket, a really good travel pillow, cozy pajamas, or a travel-sized diffuser, make yourself at home while you’re far away from it. Familiar, day-to-day consistencies and a good night’s sleep will reduce stress, allowing you to be more productive while you’re in a foreign setting.
5. Sign up for hotel loyalty programs
Like any good relationship, the more you put in, the more you get out. Staying at a hotel with an exceptional loyalty program will reward you with all kinds of privileged guest perks, like room upgrades, late check-out, Amazon credits, free nights and complimentary buffet lunches. When you’re on a long and tiring business trip, it’s the little things that make a pleasant and rewarding stay.
In addition to loyalty programs, please ask us about our smartSTAY product range which is offered at thousands of hotels across the globe. Each smartSTAY property will include at least three additional bonuses and perks such as those listed above. And we all know that when breakfast is included, it stretches that per diem so much further for lunch and dinner.
